About Us

Beverly & Steve are the owners of Timely Treasures Thrift Store. In 2012 Bev owned a cleaning service and Steve owned a tree service. For extra income, they bought a woodsplitter to sell firewood from the trees he cut down, as Steve continued his college education, and started purchasing small storage units, fixing the furniture in the back yard under the patio, and re-selling it by having yardsales. As furniture sales picked up, they rented a storage unit to store the finished furniture a couple blocks away from their home. They also rented out rooms in their home, preferably to military personnel in nearby Ft. Bragg. Later in the year Bev began tiring of the home cleaning business. Her regular customers were great, but getting new customers was not only hard, but at times... it came with unwanted demands. Steve was told by doctors that he would need shoulder surgery on both shoulders due to a past injury and climbing trees. Watching the show "Storage Wars" one night, a plan to expand their purchasing storage units began to take form.

Across the street from the nearby storage facility was a building for rent, and a phone call let them know that three others were in line to meet with the owner to possibly rent it the next day. A call two weeks later (after various people were seen outside in the parking lot selling various items) let them know that it was not rented yet, but; the landlord wanted to get several more applicants first and said he'd put them on the list. Steve told him that he wouldn't get any more applicants as the sign "for rent" was on the outside of the building and he had taken it down. The next day, Bev & Steve signed a 2-year contract.

Timely Treasures Thrift Store finally began its journey in January 2013 in a rundown 1955 cinder block 1,400 sq. ft. building that needed much repair; never realizing that it would grow to be the business it is today. It took years to build an inventory such as ours to start such an endeavor. In June of 2015, we were given a great opportunity to expand, move into a larger 4,200 sq. ft. newer building, and to be able to remain in our neighborhood less than a block away. It took us months to get this new store up and running at its full potential due to lack of inventory, county laws and zoning, signage requirements, and other road blocks; but, because of hard work, help from friends and family members, and faithful customers... Timely Treasures Thrift Store is now having its best years in sales and growth since it began years ago!

Bev & Steve put out a request on social media for customers, family, and friends to come up with potential names for the thrift store. Steve's mother Inez sent in a suggestion of... "Timely Treasures". Her late husband Robert (Bob) Riley (Steve's stepfather), had helped start a small thrift shop at the United Methodist Church in Sun City Center, Florida and named it "Timely Treasures". Bev & Steve liked the name, registered it with the Cumberland County Register of Deeds, and with the Secretary of State in N.C. "Timely Treasures Thrift Store" was born!

Business Spotlight: Timely bidding nets treasures for thrift store

  • Staff photo by Thaddius S. Dawkins II

Steve and Beverly Soderholm opened up Timely Treasures in 2013. They started the thrift shop after Steve got interested in storage unit auctions.

Owner: Steve and Beverly Soderholm

Address: 1003 Honeycutt Road, Fayetteville

Founded: 2013

Employees: Two

What is it? Thrift store

How did you guys get started? "Steve started watching the 'Storage Wars' show," said Beverly Soderholm, who owns and operates the shop with her husband, Steve. "He was actually selling the furniture out of our backyard. My brother-in-law had just started a little shop at Rockfish Flea Market and wanted me to go half in with him. I started selling all the little smalls there, but only stayed there about six months or so. I ended up moving over to Bragg Boulevard Flea Market, which has thousands of visitors on any given weekend. I stayed there a little over a year and this little building down the road from here became available. I was paying like $400 at Bragg Boulevard and that building came available for $600 a month and I could be open seven days a week, so that was a no-brainer. We were there two years and we just moved into this location five months ago."

Why did you get into the business? "I'm a breast cancer survivor. I owned my own cleaning business before I started this. Steve had his own tree business. I lost a lot of feeling in my arm from the surgery. It was just really hard to mop and scrub the floors and other people's homes. So we were just looking for something a little bit easier. Something we could retire in and have fun. This is definitely it."

What's the best part of owning Timely Treasures? "Getting to meet a lot of different people. My biggest thing is giving back to the community. We do a lot of work with Fayetteville Urban Ministry. We get people that come in here who have absolutely nothing. They're just starting over. They've lost their home in a fire. I give them things. For me, it's just part of giving back. We've been blessed. Why not bless someone else? So if we can help someone at the same time; we'll never get rich doing this business by no means, but our bills are paid. We're buying our home. We have food on the table. Just help someone else if you can. Pay it forward."

What's your busiest time of the year? "It seems like as soon as they get that refund back. Right now, it's extremely busy with the Christmas stuff coming out. We've sold all of our Christmas trees. Definitely, this time of the year, and it seems like all of the furniture sells as soon as they get their income tax back. It just flies out the door."

What do you sell the most of? "Right now, it's the antiques. Steve got a storage unit in Vass two weeks ago and it was nothing but antiques. The gentleman that owned the storage unit had it since 1989 and he was selling everything on eBay. He's 97 years old. He's not doing it anymore. He donated his storage unit to the facility, which is privately owned. The gentleman auctioned it off and Steve won the bid. This stuff has been amazing. But, normally, when we don't have things like that, it's the furniture - beds, kitchen tables, anything furniture is our best mover and what actually pays the bills."

What do you hope the customers get out of visiting Timely Treasures? "Just knowing that we are here to help them if we can. I want them to feel like they come in here and get a great deal. We've had so many compliments about how clean the store is, our prices. That's all we want. It really is about giving back and helping the less fortunate because they need it."
